Equal opportunities for an equal society

A recent Equal Opportunities Bill has been tabled in the House of Assembly, as the Bahamas gets to grips with how best to support people with disabilities.

Social Services Minister Melanie Griffin called the Bill ‘the dawn of a new day’, hailing legislation which would have a profound impact on the lives of the estimated 10,000 Bahamians currently living with disabilities.

She said the bill was “for the benefit of a large segment of our population who over these many years have long been ostracized, disenfranchised and often treated like second-class citizens in their own country.”

Know your rights

Important aspects of the Bill include establishing key rights for the disabled together with a National Commission dedicated to pursuing the rights of disabled people; work on educational rights for those with disabilities; and various development funds and exemptions for the disabled.
