Nassau, New Providence – On behalf of the entire team at ParrisWhittaker, Kenra Parris-Whittaker is proud to celebrate International Women’s Maritime Day and acknowledge the incredible women working across the sector.
Kenra Parris-Whittaker is a Partner at ParrisWhittaker and a well-known authority on maritime law. She was also recently appointed Chairperson of The Maritime Committee of the Bahamas Bar Association.
“During this important week, I would like to extend my sincere congratulations to all of the female leaders in the maritime world across The Bahamas,” said Parris-Whittaker.
“This includes everyone from the hard-working women at the Port Department, and the acting Admiralty Marshall in the northern region. That also includes the wonderful women at the Mediterranean Shipping Company, the Container Port, Freeport Harbor Company, Buckeye, and the Grand Bahama Shipyard.”
She added, “All the shipping agencies, logistic providers, and oil storage facilities play such a vital role in the day-to-day operation of the maritime industry in the Bahamas.”
In 2021, The International Maritime Organization (IMO) Assembly adopted a resolution proclaiming an International Day for Women in Maritime in May each year. The day celebrates women in the industry and is intended to promote the recruitment, retention and sustained employment of women in the maritime sector and raise the profile of women in maritime.
“We also need to pay special acknowledgment to the amazing women involved in the environmental aspect of the maritime community. This includes Waterkeepers Bahamas, and other similar organizations that safeguard our marine environment.”
“Like far too many other sectors, knowing how to find rewarding work in maritime organizations can be a challenge for young women. It’s important for those of us working today to help light the career path for the next generation and show them what’s possible.”
